I was thinking I'd like to share some ideas I've pondered, and that it'd be a good way to get to see some other users' c:
So post yours too if you like ( And feel free to correct my on any typos or anything, I'm not as fantastic a reader/ writer as I'd like to say I am )!
First a quick FAQ to minimize confusion:
What IS a "headcanon"? What does "canon" mean?
"Canon" is a term used to refer to something that has actually happened in the show/ is confirmed to be true. A "headcanon" is an idea that a fan makes up based on canon vents/ information.
Example:
Canon: Flaky's gender has been a hot topic of dispute in the fandom since her/ his/ their first appearance. Though Flaky has been confirmed a girl through the official Twitter in the past few years, their original creator stated that he intended the character to be male originally. However, the show itself seems to still present her as a rather androgynous individual; even to the point where he himself appears confused. This is evidenced by the fact that in their design she has no eyelashes as Petunia, Giggles, and Lammy do ( though neither do Ka-POW characters Panda Mom, Webby, or Wonder Wanda ), their obvious inner debate on which restroom to enter in the episode Something Fishy ( this could be argued on by the fact that the signs are difficult to distinguish gender from, their only difference being in shape and colour, except for the fact that Giggles showed no hesitation in entering what appeared to be the girls' room as Petunia was in a stall in said room as well ), Giggles, Petunia, and Lammy's reluctance to invite Flaky to their girls-only gathering ( which Flaky seems nervous asking about ) in Royal Flush, and the fact that in the blurb for Ski Ya, Wouldn't Wanna Be Ya, Flaky is referred to with both traditional male AND female pronouns. Their hobbies also raise questions ( she has been seen baking happily, and participating in sports, though visibly less happily. But it's not uncommon for males in the show to take on perpetually feminine activities-- Splendid looks rather content baking and sewing, as well as knitting/ crocheting, along with Lumpy, and Flippy is gleeful to have tea parties and dream about riding a magenta alicorn through a flower-speckled meadow. Disco Bear shatters all gender stereotypes with his obsession with grooming and beauty. Lesser examples are Sniffles and his picnics, Mime's fondness to makeup, Cuddle's tendency to pink things and apparent enjoyment of dress-up with Toothy and Cro-Marmot, Toothy swooning over Lumpy alongside Petunia and Giggles in Wipe Out, Cub showing interest in a book looking to be about fairy tales in Read 'Em and Weep, Giggle's constant outbursts of aggression in multiple episodes... the list goes on. )
Some may also speculate that the way other characters treat Flaky indicates an undecidedness in his gender. For example, Flaky appears very often with Cuddles and Nutty, more so than with any of the girls ( a point to be made is also that there are only three other female main characters, and one didn't show up until recently ), and though Disco Bear, known for his "flirtatious" nature with Giggles and Petunia, has ignored or even been rude to her in the past ( Rink Hijinks, Ski Ya, Wouldn't Wanna Be Ya, Easy Comb, Easy Go ), has shown friendliness towards him before ( See What Develops, Ski Ya, Wouldn't Wanna Be Ya ). He has also never shown any attraction to Lammy either, though ( they have not yet appeared in a common episode ). None of these, however, dictate gender, but more a break in traditional gender roles perhaps, and the fact that Disco Bear may not be Heterosexual/ exclusively interested in cis girls.
Headcanon: Flaky is either genderfluid or agender. They accept pronouns such as he/she/they, him/her/them, and his/ her/ their. Nobody gives her shit about it because in Happy Tree Friends they're ( mostly ) all friends and love and respect one anther, and nobody follows the gender stereotype to a T in the first place. Nobody even has genitals, they could all be biologically asexual and just identify as their corresponding genders. Why is this fought about so fervently. It's a cartoon on the internet about cute animals' adventures gone terribly wrong, who the Hell cares.
Now that I've properly introduced the idea, LET'S GET SHIT GOING!
1. Flaky is either genderfluid or agender. They accept pronouns such as he/she/they, him/her/them, and his/ her/ their.
2. Due to characters with genetic relations looking so similar such as Pop & Cub and Giggles & her mom being almost completely identical despite obvious age differences, I'm lead to believe that Lifty and Shifty may not necessarily be twins, but just brothers close in age.
3. Sniffles created Splendid, and once he saw that he wasn't the ideal hero, he created Splendont-- just to find out that Splendont was ALSO a shitty hero, just in different ways.
4. Due to their not actually "speaking", I find myself wondering if Disco Bear is as flirtatious as is presented, or if he's just trying to get on Giggles and Petunia's good side since he's noticed a bitterness they've taken to him. Afterall, they're the only ones who openly feel as negative towards him, even to the point where they put him down based on his appearance/ weight.
5. We've seen anthropomorphic bears like Flippy, Pop and Cub, Disco Bear, and Panda Mom and her baby. But we've also seen a very animalistic bear in Take a Hike. Could it be that tree friends once WERE normal animals, then were mutated in some sort of apocalyptic spur in radiation, causing some to develop different bodies and almost humanistic features, and some to stay the way they are or to undergo very subtle mutation? This could answer the bear thing, why we haven't been introduced to Cub's mom/ Pop's partner ( suggesting Cub was born before the event and Pop and Cub for some reason carried some gene that allowed them to change and the mother to remain the same ), why birds appear so unusually carnivorous, why there's been evidence of humans ( a humanoid skeleton holding the treasure chest in Sea What I Found, a carnival photo set in which a very human/ female-looking figure is depicted, why their homes so much resemble that of humans' but still present animalistic shelter properties like being built into trees or The Mole's house being a mole mound, etc ). This would also attribute to their use of "instincts", like Petunia spraying Disco Bear when upset in Blind Date ( though this could be pepper spray or mace ), bears', skunks, and raccoons' apparently constant desire for meat ( All these animals being natural carnivores/ omnivores ), Cuddles liking carrots, The Mole being blind, Nutty loving sugar ( squirrels love grains! ), Sniffles wanting to eat the ants, beavers using their tails as tools, Flaky's quills being a defense mechanism, Lifty and Shifty's urge to steal, etc.
Well I'll leave it at that for now! I'll probably add more of my own soon; feel free to share yours in the meantime!
